The New Adventures Of Old Christine Season 1 DVD Review:

The New Adventures of Old Christine follows the life of Christine Campbell. Christine (Julia Louis-Dreyfuss) is a neurotic, divorced mother of one struggling to balance family time and her career in a sea of snobby stay-at-home moms at her son’s exclusive private school. Christine and her ex-husband Richard (Clark Gregg) have an unusual divorced relationship in that they get along, often calling each other in the middle of the night to alert the other to a disgusting television show. Christine’s brother Matthew (Hamish Linklater) is also very much in her life and he is always there to help with moral support and to take care of Ritchie, her son.

Christine is dubbed “Old Christine” when she meets her ex-husband’s new girlfriend, the blonde, young, bubbly and cute “New Christine.” Now Old Christine must try to prove to both herself and the judgmental women around her that she can still be a good parent and can maintain a romantic life. On her first attempt at getting back into the dating game, Christine goes home with a man (Andy Richter) but discovers the next day that he is the bane of the single women at the school, known as “sad dad.” This is how Christine’s life is, despite her best efforts; she is always in second place.

The New Adventures of Old Christine Season One is a delightful surprise. Julia Louis-Dreyfuss is hilarious as the middle-aged divorcee and mother struggling to prove herself as a capable and independent woman. Christine’s return to the world of dating is as graceful as a bull in a china shop and it is made even funnier by the luck and commentary track provided by her slacker brother. For every hiccup that befalls Old Christine, Matthew seems to find success. Christine’s role as an active parent is just as difficult. She struggles in dealing with a handful of entitled, stay-at-home mothers with more than enough time to be room moms and to organize bake sales. In one episode, Christine mistakenly befriends the maid of one of these catty women and ends up spending the afternoon working as a servant to the woman and her friends.

Julia’s portrayal is so genuine that one has to wonder just how much of her is really in Christine. One thing is absolute: Julia-Louis Dreyfuss definitely deserved the Emmy that she received for the role. She will have you laughing out loud! Julia Louis-Dreyfuss is the real deal. She is an amazing comedienne and actress. Similarly, she is incredibly generous with her fellow cast mates, allowing them to shine and she is self-deprecating as she allows the writing to depict a woman struggling with growing older, particularly in beauty obsessed Los Angeles. In the pilot episode Christine openly announces to her ex-husband that she is still wearing her maternity underwear. Later in the season, after having removed her bra to get backstage at a Rolling Stones concert, she tells her brother that she needs it back because “these things are resting on my stomach.” The writing for The New Adventures of Old Christine is as quick and witty as so few great television shows are anymore, it is truly a breath of fresh air.

Julia Louis-Dreyfuss seems to have officially broken the Seinfeld curse that her fellow co-stars have previously succumbed to. Unlike both Michael Richards (Kramer) and Jason Alexander (George Costanza), who have each had failed television shows, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss’ show, The New Adventures of Old Christine will begin its third season in February.

This two DVD edition contains all 13 episodes of season one of The Old Adventures of Old Christine. It is presented in widescreen and in 5.1 surround sound. Special features include deleted scenes and a gag reel.
