Hawaii Five-O DVD Review:
Hawaii Five-0 is just the kitschy, predictable police adventure to be expected of 1970’s television programs. The biggest spectacle of the show is not only the incredible Hawaiian scenery, but also the 70’s style hairdos and outrageous costumes. With sophisticated crime dramas like CSI and The Closer on television today, it’s hard to take Hawaii Five-0 seriously. Most of the time that fills the show is not scripted, but simply vault footage of waves and sandy beaches that have nada to do with the plot. The show made it through several seasons, and although it was popular at the time, it has not held up to today’s television standard.
Filled with one-liners, obvious storylines and completely mediocre acting, Hawaii Five-0 is barely entertaining. More annoying than anything, the only humor in the show is making fun of the dated acting, camera work, and hairdos. It’s almost a chore to sit through each 45-minute episode, because they seem to go nowhere and consist almost entirely of wave curls and scenic filler.
The third season comes in a box set including 24 episodes on its 6 discs with the episodic previews in their original format. It’s shown in full screen, but aside from interesting choices in subtitled language (Spanish, Brazilian, Portuguese and English), there are no special features. Maybe the subtitle selection is to help English as a Second Language candidates learn faster?
It doesn’t seem worth the money or time to get Hawaii Five-0: The Third Season. There are no special features, no extended episodes, no deleted scenes or episodes, no commentaries...Not much to get excited about, in general. That is, unless you are in the mood to reminisce the olden days when the event was not on screen, but instead what the people gathered around the TV were doing.
