Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown DVD Review:

There are countless classic cartoon characters, comic or otherwise, which have taken full advantage of the Christmas special. There was even a Star Wars Holiday Special after the first film, complete with the stars and a bizarre collection of segments and songs. As often as Christmas is tackled, few other holidays are as predominately covered, but the one group of kids available for each holiday is the Peanuts gang. From a Christmas pageant to an Easter celebration, Charlie Brown and his friends enjoy each and every holiday. Actually, Charlie Brown tries, and often is awarded until the very last minute. Valentine’s Day is no exception for the unfortunate young baldy, who only wants a Valentine. Although he is awarded some semblance of his longing by the end of the special, I am always amazed at how poorly the young guy is treated in this particular program.

Fortunately this “Remastered Deluxe Edition” comes with two additional TV specials, each taken quite closely from the much loved comics. Not only are the two specials connected in many ways, each dealing with Charlie Brown’s love for a particular little red-headed girl, but they also fare much better on the unfortunate young man. While all Charlie Brown wants in Be My Valentine, Charlie Brown is a simple valentine, from anyone at all, he doesn’t receive even this. In You’re in Love, Charlie Brown he just wants to talk to the little red-haired girl, and even though that doesn’t happen, he gets a much happier ending than the poor kid is usually expecting.

Even more shocking is how much his luck turns around in It’s Your First Kiss, Charlie Brown. Much of this special is about an important football game that Charlie Brown, the unfortunately gullible kicker, ruins for everyone, but he is the escort for the little red-haired girl after the game. Even though these are not two of the most well-known specials and they are just an extra addition on the Valentine DVD, they are among my favorite for how well things seem to turn out for Charlie Brown. The actual Valentine’s Day cartoon is much more enjoyable in consideration of the other characters in the Peanuts gang, including a memorable crush on the garbled-speaking teacher. The DVD also has a great featurette about his luck, or lack thereof, in love.
