Beverly Hills 90210 - The Third Season DVD Review:
Whereas much of Melrose Place’s hilarity stemmed from its awareness of its own absurdity, Beverly Hills 90210 is humorous in its completely clueless execution. Much of 90210 plays like an after school special with high production values, complete with compelling moral situations such as why lying is bad and why smoking is even worse. The show is watered down drama saved only by the pretty faces of its cast and unfortunately it is incredibly addictive.
It’s the final year of high school for troop Beverly Hills and that can only mean that there must be the obligatory prom and graduation episodes. While not as particularly strong as season two, season three has more than enough memorable episodes. Of the thirty episodes contained in the set such stand outs are Perfectly Perfect where Kelly develops a serious eating disorder seemingly out of thin air and A Night to Remember, which is worth the price of the set if only to see Tori Spelling’s Oscar worthy performance. There are admittedly some clunkers such Wild Horses where Dylan embarks on a romance not fit for a Harlequin novel and Castles in the Sand where Brandon dates and absurdly racist girl who also looks like a soccer mom.
Speaking of Brandon’s penchant for hooking up with 40 year old mothers posing as teenagers; Andrea Zuckerman gets more limelight this season with episodes dedicated to her college choice and a rather hilariously bad hit and run mystery. She may be the oldest teenager alive, but the girl has spunk. The second oldest teenager alive, Steve, has less appealing plot lines with a clichéd two part episode where he employs the use of a nerd to hack into the computer system and change his grades. This evolves into a lengthy sub plot and is extraordinarily tiresome to watch when there are much better looking people in the cast to watch. While in Paris Brenda puts on an atrocious French accent in order to attract a rather simpleminded American hunk. She also develops a smoking habit which ends up being the victim of the series’ most ass-backwards attempt of a morality play. Donna doesn’t get any hotties in Paris but she does develop a working relationship with a super creepy fashion photographer!
Kelly sleeps with Dylan, Brandon sleeps with everybody, and the little Vanilla Ice that could, David, sleeps with no one. The season ends on a high note that was bound to sink with the debut of the less than spectacular season four, but that’s a story for the next set.
The extras are near identical to the ones offered on the third season collection of Melrose Place. Included is “7 Minutes in Heaven” which shows condenses every kiss and nuzzle into a seven minute video collage. While this is surely the fantasy of every preteen, this feature does little else to entertain. Also included is “The World According to Nat” and “Everything You Need to Know About Beverly Hills, 90210 Season 3” which offers the same unfunny commentators that graced the special features disc of Melrose Place. There’s obviously no expectation of mind blowing behind the scenes footage, yet the extras are still fairly slim.
Beverly Hills 90210 is an accurate portrayal of everything that was absolutely heinous about the 90’s; and for that reason it is a must own.
