In The Shadow Of The Moon (2007) DVD Review:

Prior to the film on this DVD there is an introduction by Ron Howard, known for his avid fascination with Apollo missions ever since he made Apollo 13 in the 90s. In this introduction Howard remarks that the film will be a different experience to those who lived through these missions to the moon, although just as remarkable to those too young to have seen what a remarkable event it was when astronauts first landed on the moon. If anything, In the Shadow of the Moon is able to capture the magnificent events with archived footage and interviews from the veteran astronauts with all of the wonder and amazement these events deserve.

The film is actually so simple that it is brilliant. Along with some amazing footage, the film is told only through occasional captions but mostly the interviews of the astronauts. These simple interviews from the astronauts are pieced together and edited to tell a rather complete story of the pursuit to reach the moon and how it brought the world together in a remarkable manner. It captures the true magnificence of the situation when we are told from the mouth of them men who did it and still don’t seem completely able to believe it is a reality.

Technically the film is reliant on very few things to be successful, and all of them are more than stellar (I couldn’t help myself). The effectiveness of the footage remains remarkable decades later and the astronauts couldn’t be more distinctly natural in each of their own interviews. There is a casual way that the men seem to tell their stories, as if every viewer were their grandchild sitting to hear a story. The editing for the film is also crucial, as is the music. Both are effective and often fluidly unnoticed.

The DVD special features include a featurette about composer Philip Sheppard, who created the wonderfully subtle score which add magic to the images. There is also a commentary track with director David Sington, Editor David Fairhead, and Archive Producer Chris Riley. The real quality in the special features is in the deleted scenes, which there is over an hour’s worth. The deleted scenes is just more stories from the astronauts, but they are engaging enough to listen to for much longer. There is also a bit more of the archive footage, which also makes these scenes worth watching.
