Human Giant: The Complete First Season DVD Review:

From the depths of comedy comes a fresh fashion to wear with whatever mood you may be carrying. Human Giant: The Complete First Season brings a ragtag plethora of laughs that provide smiles, chuckles, and flat out bellyachers that will help you remember what it was like to be a strange little kid with a slanted sense of humor.

Human Giant is: Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, and Aziz Ansari. These are the main comedians that instigate the majority of laughs. Anyone who is a fan of The Upright Citizens Brigade, The State, or Tim and Eric will find this comedy series deep within their vein of humor. The sketches are at times intense, the comedy is, more often than not, specific, and the cast is always on point. With help from a slue of celebrity guest stars (Jonah Hill, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Patton Oswalt, Brian Posehn, Rob Riggle, Linda Cardellini, Ghostface Killah, and more), this comedy ensemble pulls out every last one of its rubber chickens and hits you in the face with them. If you didn’t find that mildly funny or entertaining, you will not enjoy this series.

The sketches go above and beyond the call of convention but don’t miss out on parodying pop culture tidbits like “To Catch a Predator” and “Criss Angel.” Some of the best regular sketches are Illusionators, Human Giant Product Recall, and Shutterbugs. Of course, almost every sketch is filled to the brim with irreverent humor that know no boundaries except those of the imagination. Human Giant truly is as inventive as it is funny. The comedy troop raises the bar and fails to comply with traditional ideas of comedy or structure. It’s nice to see a show such as this take some serious risks because they payoff handsomely.

Anyone who is hip to the online comedy communities (YouTube, Funny or Die) and doesn’t know about Human Giant has just found their new golden goose. Human Giant has a certain taste and is not for everyone. However, if you enjoy watching things like a woman purposely trapping her child under large objects in a stranger’s home so that she can summon her adrenaline rush super strength in order to help the stranger move, or if you enjoy seeing a man ripped apart by jealousy caused by his girlfriend receiving a kiss from a killer whale at an amusement park, or if you sometimes wonder what it would be like if 9/11 and the events that followed were acted out solely by children, this is going to be the DVD set that knocks your pants clean off. Believe it or not, some people don’t laugh when they watch someone travel back to 1991 only to bring back Crystal Pepsi, or when people purposely fend off attack dogs to gain sympathy. To each his own.

The DVD set is especially delicious because not only is it unrated and full of hilarious obscenities, there are plenty of special features to keep the fun going for hours after the mere eight episodes are over. The Audio Commentary is great on each episode. The guys have a whole host of special actors sit in on each commentary and it ends up turning into a whole other piece of comedy gold. Jack MacBrayer’s comments are especially entertaining. The Deleted and Extended/Alternate Scenes are funny and show that there were plenty of options for humor in the making of the show. The Behind-The-Scenes Clips are decent but not as explosively good as they could be. The highlights from the Human Giant 24-Hour Marathon are silly and not as entertaining as the show. Although there is a large group of special guests and some clever gags, it falls a little flat. The Unaired Sketches are hilarious but you can see why they were unaired. The Live, Early Footage of Characters from the Show helps paint a brief picture of the genesis of such beloved sketches as The Illusionators and Shutterbugs. Fans will be happy to find out that The Illusionators was originally called “Mindfuckers.”

Yes, season one of Human Giant is ridiculous, hilarious, and just what we need in this darkened day and age. It is the light that helps bring smiles to all of those who are willing to believe that comedy is still alive. It is classic.
