The Pebbles And Bamm-Bamm Show: The Complete Series DVD Review:

The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show is a cartoon that I had never heard of until the release of the Complete Series set. Perhaps it is because the series is only 16 episodes long and aired in 1971. No matter, my ignorance is a direct result of the show’s impact, or lack thereof. And although the show does not even come close to living up to its original predecessor, Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm make for a somewhat entertaining onscreen couple, producing a decent cartoon. However, its mediocrity will prevent the series from resonating with anyone, even the young guns.

This program follows the famous prehistoric characters from The Flintstones: Pebbles Flintstone and Bamm-Bamm Rubble. Voiced by Sally Struthers and Jay North, the couple find themselves all grown up at Bedrock High. Fred, Wilma, Barney, and Betty join them but only enjoy short supporting appearances, and rightfully so. There are some new stone-age teenagers that also join the cast but none of them make a true lasting impression other than Bad Luck Schleprock, who comes in small and entertaining doses.

The characters of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm are strong and their chemistry is what you would expect. They are of course a couple that never overtly shows affection and they have that long time history that explains why they come off more as friends rather than romantic partners. Pebbles is always dreaming up schemes and trying to fix problems while Bamm-Bamm is left to repeatedly clean up the mess. The episode plotlines find themselves revolving around high school problems with prehistoric twists. Bamm-Bamm’s pet dinosaur follows him to school, Pebbles copes with the masses not appreciating her modern art, and the list goes on. The best part about this series is how dated it is. The costumes, tone, and music are all very 1971. That’s really the best part. Hearing Pebbles say “groovy” and other-era adopted lingo definitely sparks a laugh or two.

Unfortunately, the Special Features are only made up of the four episodes that were supposed to be season 2 but ended up being the very short-lived Flintstone Comedy Hour. The episodes are okay but as I’ve said time and time again with these cartoons, I would much rather prefer some insight to what went into making these productions and all that jazz. Of course, it’s understandable that a large chunk of those involved have passed on but still, there is material abound that is ripe for documentary featurettes. One day, they will listen to me.

So, The Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show: not stellar but not terrible. It’s a good little series to put on for the kiddies if The Flintstones is too old school for them, which is never the case. Although the show is right in the middle and not the most memorable piece of small screen production, it provides some decent entertainment that the whole family can enjoy.
