I Am Legend (2007) DVD Review:
I Am Legend finds U.S. Army virologist Lieutenant Colonel Robert Neville (Will Smith, The Pursuit of Happyness, I, Robot) alone in the world after the spread of a lethal virus has wiped out all of humanity. Set in 2012 in New York City, Neville is the last remaining non-infected person. By day he has free reign of the city, as he hunts deer in Time’s Square and hits golf balls off of the wing of a fighter jet in the bay. However, when the darkness begins to set in, Neville retreats to his well-armored home where he locks himself in behind steel barriers to keep out the “infected.”
The infected humans are vampire-like, with a pack mentality and no interest in traditional human trappings. The infected no longer communicate in a traditional manner but instead use a system of grunts and growls.
Early infection signs include a dramatic loss of hair and skin pigmentation. They also develop a frantic breathing pattern. Neville also spends his time trying to find a cure for the infected using his own body’s immunity as a launching pad toward a cure.
I Am Legend is based upon the 1954 novel by the same name, written by Richard Matheson. Several of Matheson’s novels have been turned into films including Kevin Bacon’s Stir of Echoes, Robin William’s What Dreams May Come, as well as two other films based upon the I Am Legend novel, Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth. The novel version of I Am Legend takes place in Los Angeles during the 1970s. Robert Neville is not a virologist, nor is he in the Army. He spends his days repairing his house and disposing of vampire corpses. The vampires themselves have retained their ability to communicate and often taunt Neville late into the evening. In the evening, Neville drinks his problems away, that is, until he begins to investigate and study the infection, teaching himself virology.
I Am Legend is a well-conceived modern interpretation of one of the most influential vampire novels of all time. Filmed over 50 years after it was first published, the film brings the novel into the 21st century. Will Smith is absolutely amazing as Robert Neville, who spends the bulk of the film alone. Smith demonstrates his acting chops with scenes where he spans the whole emotional gamut in a single take. His performance in I Am Legend proves that he really deserves the enormous paycheck he receives for his films.
The only complaint with the film is the modern interpretation of the vampires who are reduced to mere beasts rather than the coherent and conniving monsters from the novel.
I Am Legend is to be released in four different ways. It is available in both a Widescreen and a Full-frame single disc release that features includes the film, 4 animated comics, and PC DVD-rom content. I Am Legend is also available on Blu-Ray High Definition and a two disc release, both of which includes an alternate version of the film as well as a digital copy.
