Bonnie And Clyde (1967) DVD Review:

This is the film that changed the way film violence was shown, and it isn’t surprising that it was through the vehicle of a gangster film. Upon initial release bonnie and Clyde was panned by critics, who called it graphic and disgusting. It was too shocking for the old fashioned critics, but there was a new surge of critics who had just come onto the scene, including Pauline Kael and Roger Ebert, who praised Bonnie and Clyde as being “a milestone in the history of American movies, a work of truth and brilliance”(Chicago Sun-Times, September 25, 1967). Forty-some years later Bonnie and Clyde is still monumentally entertaining and shocking. I found myself cringing at scenes I knew were coming and affected by inevitable conclusions gangster films must come to. This was also a revival of the gangster genre, and one could argue that it set the stage perfectly for The Godfather five years later. More than anything else this film is just as entertaining and brilliant today as it ever was.

Following the rise and fall of real-life gangster couple, Clyde Barrow (Warren Beatty) and Bonnie Parker (Faye Dunaway), Bonnie and Clyde was created into a screenplay by David Newman and Robert Benton. Giving Clyde sexual problems and a few other alterations in order to make this more than just an accurate portrayal of the past, the script is smart and fun. Gene Hackman and Estelle Parsons co-star as unfortunate additions to the gang, and Michael J. Pollard plays the driver, who was a combination of several real-life people.

The new DVD release of the film has been completely remastered from the original elements. There are still moments where the film jumps, but it has long become part of the charm of the film. The image is fabulous, showing off the award winning cinematography by Burnett Guffey, and the sound is just as great. The film certainly looks great, and it comes with a few great special features as well. The first disc has theatrical trailers, but there are plenty of featurettes on the second disc. There are a series of three featurettes within a documentary section called “Revolution! The Making of Bonnie and Clyde”. All of the key figures, from director Arthur Penn to actor and producer Warren Beatty are available for comments.

The second disc also contains a History Channel special on Bonnie and Clyde, the real criminals and people, with interviews from family members. There is also a Warren Beatty wardrobe test and a few additional scenes.
