PTU (2006) DVD Review:
Johnny To’s last film, Election was a battle for control between a group of rival gangland members. It was intense and graphic, attracting the praise of American filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, and so it is no surprise that the next film was snatched up by Dragon Dynasty. PTU: Police Tactical Unit, is a great film in which police act a little bit too much lie the gangsters they battle in the film. The entire film balances on the plot of a detective losing his gun, and a police tactical unit spending the evening dedicated to trying to find the gun so the detective doesn’t get into trouble.
PTU is as explosive as his first film, but To’s brilliance as a director comes in his ability to let tension culminate a great deal before the violence comes, so that it is a grueling experience in one of two ways; if you are enjoying the film it is tense and uncomfortable because it is effective, and if the film is boring you, these slow periods aren’t likely to help. When the action does begin, however, few will find reasons not to like the film. It is a realistic and gruesomely dark film that plays almost like a comedy at one moment, and a horrifying crime film the next.
In this unpredictable way, PTU is highly enjoyable. From one moment to the next it is sincerely difficult to guess what is going to happen next, much less the mood. There are bizarre sequences that seem to come from nowhere, terrifying violence, and great cop melodrama. The special features on the DVD include three interviews. The first is with director Johnnie To, followed by an interview with leading man Simon Yam, and concluding with an interview with leading lady Maggie Shiu. There is also a commentary track on the DVD, done as always on these Dragon Dynasty Hong Kong releases, by Hong Kong expert Bey Logan.
