Loaded (2008) DVD Review:
Loaded tells the story of Tristan Price (Jesse Metcalfe, Desperate Housewives, John Tucker Must Die). He is a wealthy UCLA student with aspirations of attending law school. The film begins on his 25th birthday, where he is forced to celebrate with his father’s upper crust societal friends.
When the party begins to wind down, Tristan’s friends try to take him out for a night on the town. However, before he is allowed to go out, he and his friends must plead their case in attempt to convince his parents that he can make sound decisions. Once out, Tristan and his friends go to a go-go club where he meets April (Nathalie Kelley, Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift), a dancer at the club and all around “girl from the wrong side of the tracks.” She and Tristan hit it off while in the VIP room where she ends up inviting him to a party.
Tristan continues to pursue April at the party, where he runs into old college friend Sebastian Cole (Corey Large), the host of the party and big time drug dealer. Almost instantly, Sebastian begins to ensnare Tristan into the seedy underbelly of drug use and turf war. Tristan, apparently a recovering drug user, is quickly swept up in the glitz and frantic pace of this world as drugs are given to him, girls are thrown at him, and guns are thrust into his hands.
Soon things get completely out of hand for Tristan when Sebastian tells him to kill a rival drug dealer. Tristan backs down despite a great deal of ridicule from Sebastian and his cronies. What Tristan does not realize is that while he is engulfed in the seedy underworld of drugs and murder, Sebastian is exploiting his connection with Tristan. Using his newfound connections with Tristan’s wealthy friends and family, Sebastian begins to ingratiate himself into their circle, while he pushes Tristan out. Sebastian begins to turn both Tristan’s parents and his girlfriend against him, causing Tristan to search for solace in the arms of April and Sebastian’s cronies.
Loaded is at its most primal a revenge film hidden within a sprawling and convoluted story about drugs and money. The meat of the film is built around a somewhat convenient skeleton. The filmmakers ask for a bit too much forgiveness of the viewer as Sebastian effortlessly works his way into the illustrious and snooty high society world that Tristan is a part of. This creates a feeling of disbelief in both the driving plot and the other character’s insistence that they were not a part of Sebastian’s larger plan.
The script feels reminiscent of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, The Game, and Unlawful Entry, and does not seem to add much originality to an already saturated genre.
On a more positive note, Corey Large makes for a creepy antagonist and does a spectacular job as the outsider on the inside in the film. Hopefully Hollywood will begin to see more of him. Similar can be said about Nathalie Kelley who does a good job as the sensual and misleading femme fatale of the film.
Loaded is presented in widescreen with a 5.1 stereo surround audio track. Special features included on the disc are a behind the scenes featurette and a gag reel.
