Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) DVD Review:
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is the story of fictitious musician Dewey Cox (John C. Reilly (Chicago, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby) and his up and down lifestyle as he makes music through the ages. Dewey first realizes that he is interested in music when he encounters a pair of old blues players the same day that he tragically chopped his brother in half during a machete fight accident. Despite his young age and slight stature, Dewey was able to belt out the blues like a man who had lived ten times longer.
Dewey, who cannot do anything correctly in his father’s eyes, is regaled throughout his lifetime after this accident by the haunting phrase “the wrong kid died.” Dewey decides to pursue a career in music, but finds that being famous is not all that it is cracked up to be. Soon Dewey turns to drug use whenever there is a problem in his life. Dewey always seems to find comfort in the chemical arms of a new drug and of his beautiful duet singer Darlene Madison (Jenna Fischer, Blades of Glory and The Office).
As Dewey’s star rises and his drug use becomes more rampant, he becomes more uncontrollable. Dewey eventually getting arrested for drug use, after which he ends up in rehab. Soon he ends up doing a television variety show in the same vein as the Sonny and Cher Show and The Donny and Marie Show.
There are two kinds of spoof movies. Films like Date Movie and Epic Movie lack substance and heart; their plot lines are almost not existent, and instead are just a series of disjointed scenes connected by a loose story. On the other end, spoof films like Airplane! and Top Secret! are intelligently made films that do more than just reference other films, and can stand alone films in their own right. Walk Hard is in the latter of the two.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is yet another brain child from the prolific Judd Apatow, the creator of The 40 Year Old Virgin, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, Knocked Up and Freaks and Geeks. Walk Hard starts out spoofing some of the recent biography films that have come out in recent including Walk The Line and Ray. Very quickly the film becomes its own stand-alone story. Walk Hard includes spectacular new songs performed by John C. Reilly including “Walk Hard” and perhaps one of the dirtiest love ballads ever written “Let’s Duet” performed with Jenna Fisher.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story will be released on both a single disc and a double disc as well as a Blu-Ray high definition disc.
Special features included on all of the DVD releases include both deleted and extended scenes, eight full length song performances, the music of Walk Hard, the Real Dewey Cox, and Line-O-Rama. Also included is a feature length commentary with director Jake Kasdan, producer Judd Apatow, John C. Reilly and Lew Morton.
Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story is presented in Widescreen with a 5.1 stereo surround soundtrack.
