In The Name Of The King: A Dungeon Siege Tale (2007) DVD Review:
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale is a fantasy style film telling the tale of the aptly named Farmer (Jason Statham, Snatch, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels), a simple farmer content with his life. Things look good for Farmer until his little community is attacked by a race of boar looking animal warriors named Krugs who are controlled by proxy through the evil Gallian (Ray Liotta, Goodfellas, Smokin’ Aces). Gallian is leading these attacks at the behest of the king’s nephew, Duke Fallow (Matthew Lillard, SLC Punk, Scream), in an attempt to kill King Konreid (Burt Reynolds, Smokey and the Bandit, Sharky’s Machine) and take over the kingdom.
During the Krug attack, Farmer’s family, including his son, are brutally murdered and his wife (Claire Forlani, Meet Joe Black, Boys and Girls) is kidnapped. Hell-bent on revenge, Farmer takes matters into his own hands. He refuses to join the king’s army and sets out on his own to take on the mythical Krugs and the elusive Gallian. His journey is a long and treacherous one as he travels through enchanted forests filled with wood sprites and fights off the Krugs as he works his way toward their leader. Along the way Farmer also learns that he might not be the simple land worker he had thought he was destined to become when King Konreid informs him that he may be the king’s long lost son and as such the only heir to the throne.
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale is the latest in director Uwe Boll’s mediocre film career with previous films including BloodRayne, Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead. In the Name of the King proves once again that despite a cast list that most directors would die for, Uwe Boll cannot create a coherent film. In the Name of the King is almost impossible to follow. The plot line is all over the place as it tries to tell way too many stories including Duke Fallow’s attempts to siege the crown, Farmer as he works to save his family, as well as King Konreid’s efforts to prove he’s not too old to run his kingdom. Peppered in there randomly is Muriella (Leelee Sobieski, Never Been Kissed, Eyes Wide Shut), King Konreid’s daughter who spends her time taking magic lessons and having an affair with Gallian. All of these independent and somewhat understandable stories have been tossed into a film blender and mixed into one another creating a muddied and hard to watch film.
In the Name of the King is also painfully unimaginative and seems to be channeling its primary plot line from other fantasy films. Several scenes feel as if they are blatant rip offs of the much better Willow. In fact, if In the Name of the King had a baby or Warwick Davis, it would be hard to tell which film is which.
In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale is presented in widescreen with a 5.1 stereo surround sound track. Special features include a behind the scenes featurette, deleted and extended scenes and a theatrical trailer.
