The script will follow Lars (Gosling), a lonely, delusional young man and his unconventional relationship with a lifelike doll he finds on the Internet.

Lars And The Real Girl (2007) DVD Review:

Lars and the Real Girl is the Academy Award nominated story of Lars Lindstrom. Lars (Ryan Gosling, The Notebook, Fracture) is a painfully shy young man who lives in a small mid-western town. He is so shy, in fact, he is nervous about eating dinner with his brother Gus (Paul Schneider, Elizabethtown, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) and his sister-in-law Karin (Emily Mortimer, Formula 51, The Pink Panther). Things get a little bizarre for those around Lars, however, when he decides to purchase a sex doll online and proceeds to introduce her to everyone as his girlfriend, Bianca.

Despite concerns expressed by Lars’ family, an astute doctor (Patricia Clarkson, The Station Agent, Good Night and Good Luck) realizes that he is still incredibly high functioning and poses no threat to anyone else. She comes to the conclusion that Lars’ situation is more a delusion as he is mentally working through some serious personal issues and advises that those around him simply play along. The doctor also suggests that Bianca come back weekly for treatments for her low blood pressure. After these treatments, Bianca needs to rest but the doctor asks Lars’ to keep her company, a clever disguise for therapy.

Soon the entire town welcomes Bianca into their world as she becomes very busy doing community service activities, is elected to the school board and even finds a job at a clothing store. However, as Bianca’s popularity increases, Lars begins to feel a rift develop between him and his doll.

Throughout the film, Lars does have one constant in his life, even though he may not realize it, in his co-worker Margo (Kelli Garner, The Aviator, Thumbsucker). Margo is madly in love with him but is willing to put up with anything to be in his presence, including opening the eyes of the town.

Lars and the Real Girl is a tremendous performance piece for Ryan Gosling, and he hits a home run with it. In fact, his performance is so good that it is quite easy to forget that Bianca is not a real person with actual emotions. Emily Mortimer and Paul Schneider give equally good performances as their characters deal with this uncharted territory deep within the psyche of Lars.

Lars and the Real Girl is a tender story of a shy young man who does whatever it takes to come into his own. Despite the fact that the film’s primary love interest is a sex doll, the film maintains a constant sense of decorum and does not cross a line that would detract from the overall story and purpose, to show that people are generally good at heart.

Lars and the Real Girl is presented in widescreen and has a 5.1 stereo surround sound track.

Special Features include a deleted bathtub scene, a featurette titled, The Real Story of Lars and the Real Girl as well as a second featurette titled A Real Leading Lady. The DVD also includes the theatrical trailer.
