The 11th Hour DVD Review:

The 11th Hour, also known as Leonardo DiCaprio Presents The 11th Hour, is the latest in the long line of documentary films that desperately tries to rouse a reaction from the human race to finally take on big business and start to try to save the world from ourselves.

The film addresses the most important issue at hand for all of human kind, the rapid decline of the planet Earth. Produced and hosted by Leonardo DiCaprio (The Departed, Catch Me if You Can), the 11th Hour is a feature length documentary on environmentalism and what we as human beings can do to foster change. Included in the film are some 50 plus interviews with some of the most influential and knowledgeable minds in the world, including renowned physicist Stephen Hawking, former Soviet Leader Mikhail Gorbachev and former head of the Central Intelligence Agency R. James Woolsley, Jr.

The film also offers a great deal of hope and advice regarding the future of the Earth. Creative minds that have devised radically new worlds like William McDonough’s carbon free city and simple plans like using lower energy appliances.

It is incredibly difficult to objectively critique a film whose sole purpose is to promote change in the world. The film’s message is both clearly stated and beautifully produced. The 11th Hour does start off a little slow and occasionally feels like a series of talking heads placed together in a timeline. While this would be a problem for a narrative film or even a different documentary, the sure notoriety of those interviewed for the film make it acceptable. Beyond that, the film is practically flawless. It has an outstanding score set under a series of moving and beautiful images. The film’s voice is one of sincere concern and does not come across as preachy or pretentious.

It is a rare thing to find a documentary that is as well produced as the 11th Hour. It comes across as a documentary film with a blockbuster budget. This just furthers the strength behind the film’s voice, with world dignitaries like Gorbachev and Hawking weighing in on the issue.

The 11th Hour’s filmmakers even seem to be true to their message. The case is a thin cardboard cover made of 100 percent recycled materials. In an effort to spread their message even further, the film is set to retail below $10 per copy. It is currently selling for a mere $5.99 at Best Buy.

The 11th Hour DVD special features include several featurettes, including: Nature’s Operating Instructions and Solutions, Solutions We Have Right Now, Wonder of the World, Our Reactions in the Face of Environmental Collapse and Religious Perspectives. The 11th Hour is presented in widescreen with a 5.1 stereo surround sound track.
