Echo And Other Elephants DVD Review:
Elephants are highly remarkable animals, and I don’t believe anyone would argue with this statement, but after watching the eight specials on elephants in this two-disc collection, I also highly doubt that the average person appreciates just how remarkable these creatures are. The behavior is far more sentimental and emotional than I was prepared for, and the story of the elephants in Kenya’s Amboseli National Park, including Echo and her family, engaged me immediately and I found myself not only amazed but inspired as well. I can’t exactly say how elephants taught me to be a more humane and caring person, but somehow these majestic and enchantingly loyal animals can manage this in just the day-to-day struggle for survival.
There are actually only three specials in this set that focus on Echo and her family, but even these three alone make the set completely worthwhile. The others are just as fascinating at times, but I have to admit that I found myself attached to certain elephants in Echo’s family after watching the ordeals they went through or the challenges they were able to overcome. These animals are more than remarkable, having the ability to stick in your memory as easily as a loved character on any television program.
The animals are constantly struggling to be able to eat enough, and for this reason they often reserve their movement. The episodes with Echo are great because as long as there is no drought the animals often have enough food to play around just for fun, and the entire family becomes involved. The other episodes show the hardship in a more consistent fashion, especially in looking at the amazingly resilient elephants of the Namib and Namibia Deserts.
