One Missed Call (2008) Synopsis:

One Missed Call (2008) DVD Review:

My one bad pun per review mandate requires me to get this out of the way: This is one call you SHOULD miss! Okay, now that that weight has been lifted: This trend of supernatural post-feminism is so over at this point that Hollywood has let up on ripping off J-horror films to rip off... its own rip offs! “One Missed Call” takes the revenging ghost plot from “The Ring” and the haunted-technology-as-metaphor-for-the-post-human-condition plot from the underrated American version of “Pulse” and purées the proceedings into a watered down spook film. Long gone are the days of white blanket ghosts and in its place is yet another specimen of white-faced metaphysical spirits and the droning metallic hum that always follows in their wake. After yearly assaults of “Shutter” “Grudge[s]” in “Dark Water,” I kind of miss the white sheet days of ghost movies if only because old those skool specters didn't feel the need cheat the horror mood music via cheep "scares" that grate on the senses more than genuinely frighten through atmosphere and storytelling.

“One Missed Call” stars Shannyn Sossamon ("First Knight"), the erstwhile actress who was the next Sandra Bullock for about five minutes in the late 90s. Oh, and she resurfaced a few years ago because she named her child "Audio Science." Playing a hot psych student (yawn) who teams up with a cop (Ed Burns) to figure out why all her friends are getting Final Destinationed to death via recording calls from their doomed future self, Sossamon sleepwalks her way through this desperate horror remake. I find it funny that, just last week, there was a gem of a scene in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" where the gang makes fun of Kristen Bell for staring in a fictitious film where she finds herself tormented by "a haunted cell phone... ha, ha, ha." "Just don't answer the phone!" was the astute observation made. I know they were jabbing the real life actress' participation in "Pulse" (grr) but this moronic film is way more deserving of that level of meta-mockery. "Pulse," at least, had a relevant hook while this one, er, should get the hook. I know, I know, I promised to let off of the puns but, come on, this film had it coming.

Ed Burns is an “X-files”-ian detective that attempts to scare the ghosts off with his unique blend of bad acting and gravely voiced detachment. And it works because the ghost only concerns itself with the cute heroine (what a chauvinist!). To give you a glimpse into the general aura of confusion that taints this production the film casts Margaret Cho as Burns’ partner. Bad-Burns-Banter like “this girl NEEDS protection” is followed by the, um, razor sharp wit that Cho is known for: “from WHAT? The ghost in HER cell phone? Tell her to CALL customer service.”
If you can remember allllllllll the way back to early 2008 you might recall "One Missed Call" being the first movie causality of the year. Like getting a fatal phone call from the future, this obligatory January dumping ground release acted as a prophetic reminder that we're in store for another dreadful year of hasty horror films.
