The Adventures Of Young Indiana Jones Vol. 3: The Years Of Change DVD Review:

The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones Volume 3: The Years of Change is the third and final box set to be released chronicling the life and adventures of the amazing Henry “Indiana” Jones. This final release of the iconic and heavily awarded series features eight near feature length episodes over ten DVD discs.

Originally conceived by George Lucas as “edutainment,” the Adventures of Young Indiana Jones is meant to teach children about both historical events and people and to teach that history is fun and is all around us.

The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones: The Years of Change finds Indiana Jones working as a spy for Italy where he get wrapped up into a love triangle with Ernest Hemingway as they battle for the affections of a girl. Indy is soon whisked away to Istanbul as he tries to uncover a traitor in the French Foreign Legion just before heading of to Transylvania. Here, he comes into contact with Vlad the Impaler. Soon Indy begins working as a translator in Paris, where he once again comes into contact with T.E. Lawrence (Lawrence of Arabia) and his ideals are vanquished by bigotry. Indiana finally returns home to attend university. While there, he works in a speakeasy, due to prohibition, but he discovers jazz before trekking cross country to work in a Hollywood studio.

The entire series has been recut into chronological order. The original airing included edits that featured two shorter episodes, one featuring the pre-teen Indiana Jones (Corey Carrier, My Blue Heaven, Nixon) and the other featuring the older teen aged Jones (Sean Patrick Flannery, The Boondock Saints, Suicide Kings). The original airing was to accommodate a blistering fast shooting schedule where two camera teams would trek the world filming both halves of the episodes at once. The only negative result of this reordering of episodes is the loss of the charming old man, the much older Indiana Jones, who would bookend the original episodes.

Perhaps the only thing to trump the quality of the Young Indiana Jones series is the quality of the accompanying documentaries. Produced by former CBS news producer David Schneider, the box set features over two dozen documentaries. Featuring titles like Unhealed Wounds: The Life of Ernest Hemingway, The French Foreign Legion: The World’s Most Legendary Fighting Force, For the People, and Despite the People: The Ataturk Revolution and Anthropology: Looking at the Human Condition, the accompanying documentaries boast a quality ready for broadcast on noteworthy channels such as PBS and the Discovery Channel. Other subjects featured in the documentary series include Edith Wharton, Woodrow Wilson, Ho Chi Minh, Gertrude Bell, Alphonse Capone, and Erich von Stroheim, among many others. The documentaries also include discussions of the Hellfighters of Harlem, Prohibition, Broadway, Hollywood, and the Treaty of Versailles.

The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones Volume 3: The Years of Change is the final release of one of the most important series to ever be put onto DVD. It is good wholesome fun chock full of educational experiences and encounters. The special features make this series absolutely priceless.

The entire series is presented in full frame with stereo surround sound.
