Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is DVD Review:

Keyshia Cole, the Grammy nominated Hip Hop artist whose star has risen as a result of her hit songs including “Love,” “Let It Go,” and “I Should Have Cheated,” had a difficult childhood. Born to a drug addicted mother and an absent father, Keyshia was orphaned at a young age. Keyshia’s foster mother, Yvonne Cole, adopted her at age 4. At the young age of 12, Keyshia recorded tracks with MC Hammer. Shortly afterward, she was adopted and subsequently raised by rap royalty, the late Tupac Shakur.

At the age of 21, Keyshia caught the eye of record executive Ron Fair, whose list of artists he has mentored includes The Black Eyed Peas, Vanessa Carlton and Christina Aguilera, among several others. At the age of 22, Keyshia Cole released her debut album, The Way It Is, which features hit singles like “I Changed My Mind” and “I Should Have Cheated.” The album was ranked sixth in sales in its release week and soon became a Platinum selling record.

Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, the television series began its second season on BET in conjunction to the release of her first album by the same name. The first season of Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is found tremendous success on the afro-centric cable channel, breaking all of BET’s previous ratings records. The reality show’s second season found even more success on BET with bar raising ratings in its return. As a result, Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, is considered the number one series in BET’s broadcast history.

Season one of Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is follows Keyshia’s hectic pop princess life as she deals with celebrity and keeping track of her sisters. Season one also marked a number of major professional and personal milestones for Keyshia as she finally collaborated with Sean “P. Diddy” Combs, hit Platinum status with her debut record, and reconciled with her long time estranged mother in prison.

Season two of Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is picks up shortly after season one left off. Keyshia has moved her entire family including her recently released mother, her recovering alcoholic sister Neffe and Neffe’s three children, her manager Manny and her friend/assistant Ronique to Atlanta, Georgia.

Keyshia starts to help rehabilitate her sister and her mother, arranging for them to receive make-overs from her hair and make-up artist and new dentures for her mother. Neffe soon discovers that she is pregnant and has to deal with the reality of raising a fourth child without a spouse to help to support her. Keyshia and her family take season two to try to better themselves in starting anew in a new town.

Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, is yet another so-called reality show that chronicles the life of a celebrity and those hangers-on who try to cling to that celebrity, grasping at the scrapings that fall from that celebrity’s table. The show boils down to a group of people who are hamming it up in front of a camera, trying to come off as profound as they sit around discussing their problems, problems that every non-celebrity would kill to have to deal with. Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, like every other reality show of its ilk, comes across as whiny and condescending, as it repeatedly throws in to the audience’s face that they would never understand how hard the subject’s life is or where they are coming from, or that they are jealous of their money.

Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is, is presented in full frame with a stereo sound track.
