Ace Of Hearts (2008) Synopsis:
The film centers on Dean Cain as Officer Daniel Harding and his relationship with his K-9 partner, Ace. The duo has been a great asset to the force, especially after Ace saved Officer Harding’s life. However, Officer Harding spends more time with his dog pal than he does with his wife (played by Anne Marie Deluise) or daughter (Britt McKillip). After chasing down a suspected serial burglar, Ace is framed for attacking an unarmed citizen. He is sentenced to euthanasia, but escapes the facility. The film revolves around Ace’s return home and Officer Harding’s daughter, Julia’s, attempt to clear the dog’s name
Ace Of Hearts (2008) DVD Review:
Movies such as Ace of Hearts are meant for a specific target audience, in this case dog-lovers and pre-pubescent girls. But even this demographic shouldn’t have to suffer through a film that ignores reality and common sense. Straight-to-DVD films aren’t known for their plots and wit, but Ace of Hearts suffers from a lack of any interesting storyline.
The film centers on Dean Cain as Officer Daniel Harding and his unhealthy relationship with his K-9 partner, Ace. The film revolves around Ace’s return home and Officer Harding’s daughter, Julia’s, attempt to clear the dog’s name.
As I mentioned before, the film lacks believability. Characters continually say that they have to go by the rules, yet laws and protocol are commonly disregarded. Several characters act without any obvious motivation. The film lacks any major plot twists or suspense. Events are either resolved too quickly or lack tension and heightened conflict. The dialogue is repetitive and the sense of time in the film is distorted. However, the film does do well at planting and pay-offs, even if the results do come rather late in the film.
I didn’t expect much from Dean Cain ever since his fall from grace after the “New Adventures of Lois and Clark” was canceled. It is hard to tell whether it is acting that creates such an unlikable lead character, or the writer’s fault. Anne Marie Deluise, as his wife, puts in a fine performance and should probably have given some tips to Britt McKillip who plays her daughter. Jody Thompson, of 4400 fame, is wasted. She only has one scene in which see plays a pitch-perfect bitch.
After viewing the film I was left with numerous questions. But there were no special features on the disc to provide answers. All the disc has is previews for other straight to DVD films.
Overall, the film is completely forgettable. If it wasn’t for the notes I took while viewing the film I would have had a difficult time remembering scenes and feelings I had when I watched it. Even for dog lovers the film is lacking, as Ace’s story almost becomes a B-line plot halfway through the film, as the story focuses more on Julia.
