Over Her Dead Body (2008) Synopsis:
Devastated when his fiancée Kate (Eva Longoria Parker) is killed on their wedding day, Henry (Paul Rudd) reluctantly agrees to consult a psychic named Ashley (Lake Bell) at the urging of his sister Chloe (Lindsay Sloane). Despite his skepticism over her psychic abilities, Henry finds himself falling hard for Ashley, and vice versa. But there is a big snag. Ashley is being haunted by Kate's ghost, who considers it her heavenly duty to break up Henry and Ashley's fledgling romance, if it is the last thing she does on this earthly plane...
Over Her Dead Body (2008) DVD Review:
There are many things about Over Her Dead Body that are so generic and cookie-cutter that it becomes dull waiting for the expected plot twists to occur. Many scenes blend together, such as the many cliché romantic-comedy relationships, only slightly adjusted to try and retain some originality. Each of the romantic leads has a close friend to have all of the expected emoting conversations, there is a “gay” friend, some slapstick humor, and actors trying to cash in on the personas they have already established elsewhere. Although Paul Rudd is great and entertaining in nearly every performance, regardless of size or quality, there is simply not enough of the casual banter he excels at and far too much of the banter that Eva Longoria Parker has become famous for. Parker’s success on Desperate Housewives must have been running thin, because this role simply cashes in on her bitchy persona from the show and seems to have been rushed into the theaters with the hope that this would be enough for a meager return.
The thin plot is staged very quickly in opening scenes that tell us Kate (Eva Longoria Parker) and Henry (Paul Rudd) are engaged and that Kate is controlling. She is so controlling that she insists the angel ice sculpture must have wings, but when the ice sculpture man is driving away the sculpture accidentally falls and kills Kate. Kate is so overbearing and talkative, like the same character she has already played and is known for, that she doesn’t hear her instructions from the people in charge when she has died. As a result her spirit is just wandering around and she is watching Henry act moody. Henry’s sister finally takes him to a psychic (Lake Bell), hoping it will help him get over Kate. Henry and the psychic hit it off, but that is when Kate starts appearing to the psychic, who is conveniently the only one who can see Kate.
The love triangle with a ghost couldn’t have seemed original enough an idea to approve the film be made, and yet there isn’t much else in the film except a few supporting roles, such as Jason Biggs still happy to make a fool of himself as the pathetic best friend of the psychic. Lake Bell is pleasant enough, although not quite enough to drown out Longoria Parker, but the real saving grace of the film is Rudd. He is only given a few scenes to shine, most of which are with Bell, but these moments almost make the rest of the film bearably forgettable.
