The story follows a man (Baker) whose life is upended by a mysterious e-mail containing the names of every woman he has had sex with and, eerily, every woman he will have sex with in the future.
Sex and Death 101 is a black comedy about a wealthy, handsome, successful man named Roderick Blank (Simon Baker, The Devil Wears Prada, The Affair of the Necklace). Roderick is happy, his business is hugely successful and he is engaged to get married in two weeks, that is until one day he gets an email from an anonymous source that lists the 29 women he has had sex with, up to his fiancée, the only problem is, there are another 72 names on the list.
As it turns out, by some twist of fate, Roderick has mistakenly received this list from a super computer created by a group of angels named Alpha, Beta and Fred (Patton Oswalt, Balls of Fury, Ratatouille).
The first two were easy, and accidental, but soon Roderick feels compelled to begin meeting up with the women on the list. Soon what seemed like the ultimate gift from God ends up being the ultimate curse for Roderick, especially when he falls in love with a beautiful veterinarian name Miranda (Leslie Bibb, Talladega Nights: The Legend of Ricky Bobby, Skulls) who is not on the list. Now Roderick must figure out a way around the list in order to successfully end up with the first woman he has ever fallen truly in love with.
Meanwhile, a mysterious serial killer named Death Nell (Winona Ryder, How to Make An American Quilt, A Scanner Darkly) has been killing womanizing men. The problem for Roderick is that this serial killer, whose real name is Gillian de Raisx, is the last woman on the list.
Sex and Death 101 includes an ensemble cast including Julie Bowen (24, Joe Somebody), Neil Flynn (Magnolia, Hoot), and Mindy Cohn (The Facts of Life, The Boy Who Could Fly), all of whom add to the already surprisingly entertaining film. Granted it does tend to be a tad raunchy and times, and you certainly would not want to watch it with your mother, but the film ends up becoming an entertaining film about falling in love with the person you least expect to. The film proves to be a surprise, Winona Ryder and Simon Baxter have real chemistry with each other while Patton Oswalt is hilarious as Fred, the irreverent loop-hole searching angel working to save Roderick. Be warned that despite the rewarding ending and humorous plot, there is an enormous amount of nudity. Sex and Death 101 proves to be a much funnier and engaging alternative to Good Luck Chuck.
The Sex and Death 101 DVD release includes the film presented in anamorphic widescreen with a 5.1 stereo surround soundtrack. The film will also be available on Blu-Ray high definition disc. The DVD special features include an audio commentary with writer/director Daniel Waters, the theatrical trailer as well as a featurette titled 101 Perversions.
