'Til Death Do Us Part DVD Review:
‘Til Death Do Us Part is the American titled version of the Australian/Canadian television series Love You To Death. The series is a docu-drama show featuring re-enactments of stories of couples getting married who eventually have their relationships head south to the point where one decides to kill the other. According to the show, the episodes are based on actual court cases, changing the names to protect the innocent.
Hosted by actor/ writer/ director John Waters (Pink Flamingos, Serial Mom) as the Groom Reaper, an Alfred Hitchcock or Crypt Keeper type host of Alfred Hitchcock Presents or Tales from the Crypt. The series runs on Court TV and features an opportunity for the viewers to text their suspicions in a modern day audience participation gimmick, at the 15-minute break in the show.
The series features so many re-enactments that include the story of a wealthy doctor who marries a young gold digging woman who black mails him when he decides to divorce her and a strip club owner who marries one of his employees, only to find that she has been working off the clock. Other stories include a gay flight attendant who marries for companionship and a man whose wife’s past comes to haunt him when he tries to run for home owner’s association president.
The dramatic re-enactments seem to be deliberately over the top. The performances are seriously over acted with horrifically corny dialog. In a like fashion, the series is filmed using camera angles and lenses that add to this look of cheesiness, including fish eye lenses and low angle shots that do not follow traditional line of sight rules.
‘Til Death Do Us Part is one of those guilty pleasure shows that is a thrill to watch despite the low-grade acting and production quality. The show is eerily reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, complete with its humorous puns and entertaining host. The show is a fun and interesting little break from the tiresome world of reality dance competitions, talent competitions and bachelor shows. Despite the extremely dark subject matter of ‘Til Death Do Us Part is a joy to watch, and makes a person appreciate their own happy relationships.
The DVD box set of ‘Til Death Do Us Part features all 13 half hour episodes of relationships going sour and the murders that result. The episodes are presented in Anamorphic widescreen. The series also includes bonus features like interviews with the series’ creators as well as the host, John Waters. It also includes a collection of new introductions for the shows by John Waters.
