Superhero Movie (2008) Synopsis:

Superhero comedy spoof.

Superhero Movie (2008) DVD Review:

When Airplane, The Naked Gun, and the many replicate spoof films gained the admiration of filmgoers decades ago there is no arguing that sophomoric humor was the basis for much of the popularity. Without the base racial jokes and shocking gags such as blow-up dolls smoking these films would not have been as entertaining or as popular, and perhaps that was the logic when the Scary Movie franchise was started. The numerous Scary Movie sequels as well as countless replicas in the same idiotic form, titled simply and often deceptively (Epic Movie, Date Movie, and now Superhero Movie). Although these spoofs are widely titled they seem more and more apt to become a spoof of a singular film. Superhero Movie is merely a spoof of Spider-man, but anyone who has seen these spoofs knows that the jokes are no longer clever enough to even be recognized as spoofs. These films simply take the preconceived plot provided from a popular film and appropriately add as many sex and bathroom jokes in-between base moments of violence we are supposed to find humorous.

Gone is the tradition of slapstick where an actor was able to use his own body in order to get laughs. Instead of the fine talent of getting injured that has a rich tradition in cinema from Laurel and Hardy to Jackie Chan, but thanks to easy and sloppy computer generated effects and disgusting humor, Superhero Movie takes glee in juvenile violence. Simply put, this is a perfect film for a bully to see with his budding bully of a child. The mother can even sit there with the satisfaction of at least allowing her impressionable child to watch a PG-13 film, as many of these grotesque spoofs have been rated since the third Scary Movie, ironically the first to actually offend me. What makes Superhero Movie even more basely offensive is the fact that it is sure to draw the attention of a younger crowd with a young cast that has mostly been seen in children and family entertainment.

Drake Bell of the children’s show, Drake & Josh, stars as the Spider-Man-type hero, although in order to parallel Spider-Man without copying it exactly he is bitten by a genetically-altered dragonfly. Next door to him is his unrequited love, played by Sara Paxton of Aquamarine, although he mostly just stares at her as she dresses and undresses. Even Leslie Nielsen’s appearance as the grandfather helps little in improving another disgustingly offensive Craig Mazin film. Although this is only Mazin’s second film as a director, he is the infant responsible for the worst of the scripts to ooze from the Weinstein’s genre-focused Dimension. Mazin has written the worst Scary Movie scripts beginning with the repulsive third entry, and writing his own script for Superhero Movie only allows him to fit as many animal killings, women beatings, and farts into the Spider-Man script while changing as little as possible. This may be one of the laziest and offensive films I have ever seen and the only thing that could ever get me to sit through it again would be the insurance that Mazin would never be able to gorge himself on the complacency of their audience.
