Eight Legged Freaks (2002) DVD Review:
The residents of a rural mining town discover that an unfortunate chemical spill has caused hundreds of little spiders to mutate overnight. And their hungry! Chris McCormack (Arquette) and Sheriff Sam Parker (Wuhrer) mobilize an eclectic group of townspeople, including the Sheriff's young son, Mike (Terra), her daughter , Ashley (Johansson) a paranoid radio announcer Harlan Griffith (Doug) and Deputy Pete Willis (Overton) into battle against the bloodthirsty eight-legged FREAKS!
EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS is an amusing film. Dialogue is deliberately clichéd and action is intentionally hysterical. This film is a entertaining monster flick that brings us back to the days of mutated bugs that reek havoc over a small town. This film obviously tanked at the box office, but if you’re a enthusiast of “Creature Double Feature” type horror/comedy films don’t miss out on this one. This film will truly be a delight to watch when you just can’t find the right type of film to rent on that rainy day.

The Video
EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS appears in an aspect ratio of 2.35:1 on this single-sided, dual-layered DVD; the image has been enhanced for 16X9 televisions. The DVD presentation was solid. Sharpness was superb. There were no signs of softness during the film, the picture remained crisp and detailed through out. No concerns regarding jagged edges but I did notice some edge enhancement on a couple of shots. Colors remained natural and well-defined. Black levels remained deep, while shadow detail was fittingly thick. Overall, I thought EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS provided a enjoyable visual presentation.
The Audio
EIGHT LEGGED FREAKS is presented in a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack. The soundfield provided an extraordinarily active piece of work. You can hear a bit of commotion from the spiders, which enhances the “creepy crawly” experience. Effects moved cleanly across all four channels; engaging collectively. Music also showed superior stereo presence as did dialogue, which came across natural. By and large, the Dolby Digital 5.1 mix complemented the material quite nicely.

Overall
I thought this ridiculous film was a lot of fun. The DVD offers a great picture along with exceptional sound and the supplements are quite good as well. This film comes highly recommended for those big horror/comedy fans or for anyone who fears spiders because you will be truly creeped out.
