Girls! Girls! Girls! (1962) DVD Review:

Set in Hawaii, the story focuses on Ross Carpenter (Elvis), a fishing guide and sailor, who loves to live out on the sea. When he finds out his boss is retiring to Arizona, he has to find a way to buy the Westwind, a boat that he and his father built.

Half of the film's music tunes take place on boats and character interactions are mostly restricted to nightclubs. Therefore, it makes perfect sense to question why the film didn't explore this exotic locale further than the sea and nightclubs. Elvis makes a good impression here and sings with much delight and tone. Stella Stevens feels second-rate and her talent doesn't flourish much here. Instead, Elvis plays more off Laurel Goodwin and their interactions have some common chemistry.

In summation, Girls! is a fairly decent film, but something is missing in between. This "something" restricts the film to rise up to the quality level. Some of Elvis' songs in this film include the title song, "A Boy Like Me, A Girl Like You," "I Don't Want To Be Tied," "Return To Sender," and others.

The Video

Once again, the print is fairly old. Grainy images trouble the screen throughout the film, while some scenes almost look like stock footage (or was it that twitching in my eyes). I didn't expect much quality in the first place, which is why I don't feel it is necessary to complain. The print is not terrible, mind you, but it just isn't very clear and up-to-date with today's standards.

The Audio

Here is where the DVD brings quality to the discussion. Dolby Digital sound is available in English 5.1 Surround, English Restored Mono and French Mono. Again, the audio quality impresses. Front and rear speakers come alive during many of the musical numbers and it's a pleasure listening to the tunes.

Overall

Girls! Girls! Girls! makes for some decent entertainment with some fun musical numbers and Elvis impresses. The audio Dolby Digital sound improves on the lackluster print quality. If you like girls, you should enjoy this flick.
