Mystery Science Theater 3000 Collection: Volume 9 DVD Review:

It is amazing how many ways there are to enjoy film. It is one art form that can still be enjoyable even if it is awful. In fact, Mystery Science Theater’s motto seems to be the worse the better. Mystery Science Theater is a cheesy show with a horrible excuse to get a couple of comedians making fun of bad movies from the past. Not all of the episodes are worth sitting through a bad film, which is why the episodes are released in collections, with only the best episodes. Collection 9 has a variety of genres including a film from the worst director of all time.

The premise of the show changed over the years, but basically a man is trapped in space and forced to watch bad movies, whether for medical research or for pure torture. Lonely, Mike creates a number of robots to keep him company and to make wisecracks during the bad films. We watch the film with them and get to experience their wisecracks as coming from their silhouettes at the front of the theater. Every so often they use the silhouettes to make shadows on the screen, an immature joke that fits well in this show. All of the skits during the show are awful. The storylines are silly and cheesy, possibly as bad as the films they are forced to watch, but the humor during the film is what makes the show worthwhile.

Women of the Prehistoric Planet
This science fiction bomb has it all, including the strings showing on the model planes. Mike and the gang have a ton of fun picking this one apart. It is about a spaceship that lands on a foreign island after an altercation. They are stranded and must fight to survive. It is the same premise for dozens of science fiction movies, but this time it is really bad. There is a bonus feature of an introduction by Irene Tsu, one of the actresses in the film.

Wild Rebels
Moving away from the usual horror and science fiction films, we are blessed with the cheesiest motorcycle gang film that the MST 3K gang could find. An ex-race car driver is approached by a gang of motorcycle thieves when they are no longer able to rob banks on their recognizable bikes. Soon after, the same driver is approached by the cops to go in undercover for them. Soon this poor sap is stuck in between a rock and a bad film.

The Sinister Urge
There is nobody that does bad films like Ed Wood. This one is most ridiculous for its plot, although the acting is the usual Ed Wood awful. A couple of detectives are trying to find the murderer of a group of girls. It seems there is a serial killer that kills girls from dirty photos and movies. As a warning against pornography, this film shows insanity resulting from looking at a naked woman. There are a few other great gems in here, such as a fight that Ed Wood was an actor for. There is another stunt which was done by Conrad Brooks, which he talks about in an introduction to the film.

The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies
This may be the worst in the bunch, mostly just because it is nearly impossible to figure out what is going on. The sound is horrible, which is the biggest running joke for Mike and the robots during the entire film. To make things even worse one of the characters has a foreign accent, so nearly everything that comes out of his mouth is jumbled. It is also just an acid trip of a film, with hallucinations and strange hypnosis.
