Date Movie (2006) Synopsis:
The twisted minds of two of the six screenwriters behind "Scary Movie" – Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg – this time skewer the romantic comedy genre. The new film tells the story of hopeless romantic Julia Jones (Hannigan), who has finally met the man of her dreams, the very British Grant Funckyerdoder (Campbell). But before they can have their "Big Fat Greek Wedding," they'll have to "Meet the Parents;" hook-up with "The Wedding Planner," and contend with Grant's friend Andy – a spectacularly beautiful woman who wants to put an end to her "Best Friend's Wedding."
Date Movie (2006) DVD Review:
Jokes are riddled all over Date Movie. So much so that the DVD even has jokes all over the package. The cover is the same as the theatrical poster, bragging that the film is written by two of the six writers of Scary Movie. This was conveniently advertised just before the fourth awful Scary Movie film, which says that maybe these writers shouldn’t be bragging so much. Date Movie is a sad attempt at recreating the buzz that films like this used to create. Releasing an unrated version of the film on DVD is just another ploy to get a small amount of extra attention for minimal changes in the theatrical version.
The same way that Scary Movie spoofed horror movies, Date Movie spoofs many romantic comedies, but it doesn’t stop there. Like a steamroller, once Date Movie gets started it rolls over any popular film in its wake, romantic comedy or not. It seems that the only genre Date Movie really stays away from is horror. That way there is still a little bad material to cover for all of the many Scary Movie sequels that seem to keep coming. Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan) is looking for love but it isn’t working for her. At first she is overweight, just like Bridget Jones, as well as working as a waitress in her parent’s restaurant, just like My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Soon she finds her dream man and they are planning their life together when the devious ex shows up in time for the musical number at the dinner table.
The comedy is so outrageous, it isn’t really that funny. The unrated DVD has a number of special features to throw in the mix, but special features are only exciting if the film they come from is good. What does it make sense to watch extras from a film you hardly liked to begin with. There are a number of deleted and extended scenes, including extended dailies from a poolside bikini scene. Sadly, this is probably the most entertaining extra. As horrible as the film was, some of the features are actually quite creative. I would love to see the same effort towards a comedy that I actually enjoyed.
There are a number of commentary tracks. Two of them are traditional, with directors, writers and actors, but the other is an anti-commentary as well, with film critics Scott Foundas and Bob Strauss. Other unique features include an optional laugh track over the film, games, a six minute version of the film, and a number of quick featurettes. Luckily they are smart enough to keep all of the featurettes short as to prevent boredom, but even the shortest can be tiring after already sitting through the bad film.
