The sequel to the $100 million worldwide hit, "Underworld: Evolution" continues the saga of war between the aristocratic Death Dealers and the barbaric Lycans (werewolves). The film traces the beginnings of the ancient feud between the two tribes as Selene (Kate Beckinsale), the beautiful vampire heroine, and Michael (Scott Speedman), the lycan hybrid, try to unlock the secrets of their bloodlines. The fast-paced, modern-day tale of deadly action, ruthless intrigue and forbidden love takes them into the battle to end all wars as the immortals must finally face their retribution.
Underworld: Evolution (2006) DVD Review:
In preparation of making the first Underworld film, they had to decide how to tell the story in the best way possible. They seemed to think that it would be best to split the film in half, creating two films. The films are layered together in a way that makes it somewhat important to have seen the first film. Many sequels are made to be an easy ticket seller, and they dumb them down for people who haven’t seen the previous film as well. It is somewhat refreshing to see a story which continues so flawlessly. Unfortunately, there are many scenes in which the amount of knowledge which is needed to understand the deep mythology behind the film. It is fortunate that the action breaks up the story every time it slows down for more than a moment.
Underworld Evolution begins exactly where the last film ended. Underworld was about an ancient feud between vampires and werewolves, and Underworld evolution examines the beginning of the feud while it heads towards the future of the two races. At the beginning of the film Selene (Kate Beckinsale) and Michael (Scott Speedman) have killed a powerful vampire who betrayed them, and now they are on the run. Selene is a vampire, but she is in love with Michael, who is a werewolf hybrid. They seek peace together, but first they must stop evil rulers at the top of the vampire throne.
The action is near non-stop, with plenty of great special effects. It is absolutely entertaining to watch, although many of the scenes seem separated. There are very carefully placed scenes throughout the film to balance the action with the dialogue, but they don’t always flow smoothly into each other. In the end it just feels like collection of great vampire and werewolf action and some background dialogue. There is a subtle yet explicit sex scene between Michael and Selene, but it seems to come out of nowhere. Many scenes just start without any lead in whatsoever. The addition of guns into the usual creature violence makes this one of the better action/horror films. If nothing else, it is more accessible than the first film.
The special features include a commentary track with the filmmakers, including the director. It is a technical track with plenty of talk about special effects, miniatures and make-up, but they seem to be enjoying themselves. They laugh and have fun, but it is often boring to listen to them have fun. There is also a music video by Atreyu and a number of featurettes. The featurettes are mostly about the visuals of the film, except for a music and sound featurette and a generic making-of featurette. The featurettes give a great deal of information, but they also have a lot of wasted time spent showing clips from the film. This may be fine for a fan who has not seen the film in a while, but I watched the features after the film. I don’t need to see the same footage all over again unless there is voice over feeding me information about the production. The DVD is available in both widescreen and full screen special edition.
