The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2006) Synopsis:

"The Heart is Deceitful Above All Things", is based on JT Leroy's critically acclaimed novel of the same name. The story is about Jeremiah, a child who is pulled from his foster home and thrown into a troubled life on the road with his teenage mother, Sarah. With Sarah, Jeremiah travels through the country roads of the U.S. and learns first hand about the troubles of the world.

The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2006) DVD Review:

There was a great deal of conversation when the truth came out about JT LeRoy, the cult author of the best-selling novel The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things. JT LeRoy was never a real person and neither is any of the material in the story, and subsequently the film. Exploitation this one-dimensional would only be slightly excusable if it were unintentional. If this were a true story then the storyteller could not be blamed for the thin characterization and cliché scenes of child abuse which bounce back and forth from a prostitute mother and a bible-thumping grandfather. However, this was created, which makes it stink of elitist scum. I have certainly seen worse and more offensive film, but it has been a long time since I have seen a film so unabashedly pointless in its exploitation.

Daughter of famed Italian horror director, Asia Argento wrote, starred and directed this pile, and it shows. Argento plays a stripper mother who tries as hard as possible to be a modern day Nancy to every Sid she meets, snarling in each scene with a southern accent blended into a thick Italian accent that is explained away by an Italian mother in one scene. It doesn’t matter much anyway. The accent is not the only evidence of Argento’s inability to act. Her performance, although oozing with sleazy strip club sexuality, is disgraceful. I would blame the director for not telling her she can’t act, but she was the director as well.

We are witness to the destruction of a young man as Jeremiah is returned to his mother’s custody at the age of seven. Knowing that each scene is a lie makes it easier to swallow the fact that there is no accountability for how he is taken care of. Jeremiah is abused, left alone without food, given alcohol and drugs and any other horrific thing you could think to put a child through. Knowing that it was all made up makes me wonder why anyone would want to put so much hatred in one film. It is sad to watch, and angering to think that so many talented actors such as Peter Fonda and Michael Pitt would waste their time with pointless waste.

The DVD includes a photo booklet insert, with photographs by Mick Rock. There are photos of “JT LeRoy”, as well as quotes about the hoax from random celebrities. The DVD has a commentary track with Asia Argento and a producer and there are two featurettes, which are basically just home movies with sound that is worse than the sound in the film, and that says a lot.
