Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) Synopsis:

Academy Award winners Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy star with Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker in this comic, heartwarming tale of family, friendship and murder in rural Georgia. In a Southern nursing home, a feisty resident and old local fixture named Ninny Threadgoode (Tandy) befriends Evelyn Couch (Kathy Bates) a depressed housewife and stirs her to action with an inspirational tale. She tells the story of a transcendent friendship between two young women living in Georgia in the 1930s, Idgie Threadgoode (Mary Stuart Masterson) and Ruth (Mary Louise Parker), who forge a powerful bond after witnessing a terrible tragedy together. The two women open a cafe (where fried green tomatoes are a house specialty) together in their small Southern town of Whistle Stop and manage to survive the hardships of life, despite racism, prejudice and the pressures of trying to live their lives as individuals in a strict and close-minded Southern society. Their friendship lasts through many ups and downs over the years, helping one of the women through an abusive marriage, and buoying both of them through the gossip and jealousy of those small-minded people who try to control their lives.

Fried Green Tomatoes (1991) DVD Review:

Just barely missing Mother’s Day, an Anniversary Edition of the women bonding weeper has been released on DVD. The new edition contains an extended version of the film for fans of the uplifting tear-jerker about two separate friendships in two different time, but taking place roughly around the same area. Adapted from Fannie Flagg’s best-selling novel and starring Kathy Bates, Jessica Tandy, Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker and directed by Jon Avnet. It also features a wonderful and memorable score by Thomas Newman.

Bates plays Evelyn, an unhappy middle-aged married housewife who befriends chatty 83-year old Ninny Threadgoode (Tandy). At first Nanny is just a talkative old woman in a nursing home, but as she begins to tell Evelyn stories about a friendship two women had in Depression era Whistle Stop, Alabama. Idgie (Masterson) and Ruth (Parker) ran a local café in Whistle Stop after they formed a bond losing someone they were each close to. The story of these two women begins to inspire all sorts of changes in Evelyn’s life and it brings her closer to her new friend Mrs. Threadgoode.

Green Fried Tomatoes takes on a large number of events in the telling of two stories, and this can be overwhelming at times. The narration helps a bit, but it also makes very little sense. It is never clearly explained how Mrs. Threadgoode knows so much. She has all of the details in the relationship between the women, even though she is not really involved in the story at all. By the end of the film it all seems much larger than it originally appeared. This is a chick flick of epic proportions. There is KKK and murder along with the pies and heartfelt talks.

The Anniversary Edition DVD comes with an extended version of the film and a number of new special features. There is a great feature commentary with director Jon Avnet as well as his director’s notes from the film. There are some deleted scenes and outtakes, neither of which are spectacular, but the poster campaign and production photographs galleries are great. There is also a number of recipes from dishes made in the film and a making of feature which is about an hour long.
