Beavis And Butt-Head: The Mike Judge Collection Vol. 2 DVD Review:

I still remember when MTV would have Beavis and Butt-Head marathons all night long. I would stay up and watch hours of this juvenile cartoon. The difference in this cartoon and many cartoons of this generation is the fact that Beavis and Butt-Head is in no way intelligent. The humor is simple and classically funny. Shows like Family Guy and South Park use humor that seems too sophisticated for a cartoon, while making full use of the fact that they are cartoons. Beavis and Butt-Head is more like the cartoons that were on television Saturday mornings when I was a kid, except for the fact that Beavis and Butt-Head are gross, offensive, and stupid. It reminds me of high school.

Beavis and Butt-Head is a unique cartoon in the fact that each “episode” is now only about five minutes. The show used to be composed of two fifteen minutes cartoons each episode, but that included the commercials and the segments in which Beavis and Butt-Head are watching music videos. The commercials have obviously been removed, which took up 1/3 of the half hour, and unfortunately the music videos have been removed as well. There are thirteen music videos in the collection, but they aren’t peppered into the cartoons the way they used to be. Now each cartoon is only about five minutes. It was much more entertaining to watch when they were broken up with music videos. It is unfortunate that the show can’t be seen the way it was made to be seen. This was my problem when they first released this show on VHS, and it hasn’t changed. Although Mike Judge has certainly picked the best episodes for this collection, there should be more than just thirteen music videos considering they used to take up 1/3 of the show.

Volume two of Mike Judge’s Collection has a number of classic episodes mixed in with a few I hadn’t seen. There are forty cartoons which were hand picked by Mike Judge and set onto two discs. The third disc in the set is only for music videos and special features. The forty cartoons include a classic Great Cornholio episode as well as the episode where the guys try and get Spanish Fly. One of the best episodes in the bunch is Candy Sale, which features guest star David Spade.

Disc three has thirteen classic videos inter-cut with the cartoon, as it was seen on MTV. Thirteen doesn’t seem to be enough, but I suppose it is better than none. Even though there are only a few music videos, Mike Judge has picked the best of the bunch. Not only are they great music videos, but they also have some of the best Beavis and Butt-Head commentary over them. Music videos like Beastie Boys, “Sabotage” and Radiohead, “Fake Plastic Trees” are fantastic with the Beavis and Butt-Head logo in the corner. The videos were usually shortened for the show, so they are shortened on the DVD as well.

Special features include a great combination of old footage from Beavis and Butt-Head appearances and the second part featurette about Beavis and Butt-head. Some of the appearances included on in the collection are Butt-Bowl 1994-1996 and MTV’s 20th Anniversary Special. Calvin Klein ad parodies are also included along with a Moron-A-Thon clips with Snoop Dogg. There are also a number of promos to watch.
