Charlize Theron has signed on to star in The Burning Plain.

She will play the role of Sylvia, who tries to find common ground with her parents after a turbulent childhood.

The movie is being written and directed by Guillermo Arriaga, who has previously written Babel, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, Amores Perros and 21 Grams.

Mark Cuban's 2929 Productions are financing the indie project.
