Following the failures of female superhero movies such as Catwoman Lionsgate have dropped their adaptation of Marvel’s The Black Widow. David Hayer was set to write and direct but a serious direction for the story was never agreed upon. Hayter's version would have involved the Black Widow being given to the KGB at birth. The KGB grooms her to become its ultimate operative. When the U.S.S.R. breaks up, the government tries to kill her as the action moves to present-day New York, where she is a freelance operative.
