They’ve graced our cinema screens for over 20 years now bringing horror, gore and violence, and it seems the sub-genre Slasher is returning.
The Slasher film mostly consists of a lead villain that one-by-one kills a group of teens or young adults who always seem to be indulging in some sort of vice whether it be drugs or sex.
This villain though is indestructible and manages to survive allowing producers to make many many sequels.
Many would suggest the beginning of the slasher movie started in the 60’s with such films as Peeping Tom and Hitchcock’s Psycho and moved in a direction toward Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chainsaw Massacre which became very controversial at the time of it’s release. Wrongly so as there isn’t much graphic violence included.
The success of these types of film’s influenced and by the late 70’s early 80’s John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) was released and Sean S. Cunningham’s Friday the 13th (1980) took the world by storm.
The genre was a success as the audience could sit back and enjoy rather than have to think about complicated plots or twists (Though the slasher films do have a twist of the killer not being dead)
In 1984 Wes Craven’s A Nightmare on Elm Street was viewed by audiences and became a huge success especially with the teenage market.
By the late 80’s people began to tire of the slasher flicks and their many many sequels. (Halloween 7 sequels, Friday the 13th 10 sequels, A Nightmare on Elm Street 7 sequels)
These excessive never-ending sequels were straight-to-video by the mid 90’s and it seemed as though the Slasher flick had had its time.
Until in 2003 a group of people had a great idea of pitting two of the greatest screen serial killers against each other in the hope of a revival of the sub-genre, Freddy Vs. Jason.
This worked a treat and ignited a new generations interest in elaborate killings and gratuitous violence.
Producers are now in talks about a remake of Friday the 13th. Could we be seeing a new flow of Serial killing Slashers?
