Headline: John Carter of Mars delayed!

Word reaches us that the much in gestation (and will this EVER get made?) John Carter of Mars has agin been pushed onto the back burner by Paramount Pictures.

Jon favreau revealed the set acbk in an interview "John Carter of Mars, reports Sci Fi Wire. Director Jon Favreau (Zathura) was still expecting to make John Carter his next film after Iron Man as of two weeks ago, but now he's been asked by the studio to wait.

John Carter of Mars — titled A Princess of Mars at one point — was to be based on a series of novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs written nearly a century ago. The speculative tale tells of a Civil War captain who goes through a portal to Mars and becomes a hero in a war that ravages Mars as clans compete for its diminishing resources.

Paramount seemed committed to the project a few months ago, but now that they've got a new Star Trek film on the agenda, they'd like to focus on that instead. Perhaps they see some risk in having too much science fiction on the table at once.

The studio really liked [the script and concept art for John Carter of Mars], but they've committed to doing the Star Trek franchise, to start that up again, with J.J. [Abrams], and they have other science-fiction properties, and they don't think the timing is right. And, hopefully, by continuing my relationship with them, by doing this Iron Man film, I'll leave the door wide open for Carter, which is a much more challenging property."

So you've at least three to four years MINIMUM to wait. Bit of a bummer for Burrough's fans.
