Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay (2008) Movie Review:

Played out as the Cheech & Chong of the current generation, Harold (John Cho) and Kumar (Kal Penn) are back again in the sequel Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, which is just as goofy and amusing as its predecessor.

Picking right up where Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle left off, college stoners Harold and Kumar quickly embark on another adventure. This time to two are headed to Amsterdam to follow the Maria (Paula Garces), the love of Harold’s life, though he has only barely known her. After getting in an argument with airport security over ethnicity, Harold and Kumar run into Kumar’s ex, Vanessa (Dannell Harris), who is now engaged to the chudish right winged Colton (Eric Winter). The duo actually gets arrested off of their flight for Kumar’s high-tech bong being mistake as a terrorist weapon. A racist government agent named Fox (Rob Corddry) throws the two in jail at Guantanamo Bay stating that they are dangerous terrorists. After escaping from Guantanamo Bay the film then turns into a comedic road trip film with two coming across a bottomless pool party, an inbred Cyclops, a KKK rally, their buddy from the previous film Neil Patrick Harris, and of course lots of raunchiness and marijuana along the way.

The writers and directors of this film, Jon Hurwitz & Hayden Schlossberg, know what makes this film work for its intended audience and all they did was rehash all of the situations from the first film in different settings. The script is just about two college friends that smoke weed and learn from its effects and the problems it puts them in. The blueprint is simple, but what makes this and its predecessor funny, is the fun that Hurwitz and Schlossberg poke at racial stereotypes. Though drastically over the top and desperate at times, the stereotyping is the centerpiece of this comedy. The film is also very sleazy, crude, and overall dumb, but this is a comedy that is not taking itself seriously at all. The once again addition of Neil Patrick Harris as himself is amusing as is a new addition of a commander and chief that has the same beliefs in drugs as Harold and Kumar.

John Cho and Kal Penn reprise their roles as the two title characters. Both actors work terrifically off of each other, with Cho being the more reserve type and Penn being the one that always gets the two in a bind. Rob Corddry is chews the scenery as the racist government agent hot on Harold and Kumar’s tail and there are many other cameos throughout the film, such as by Missi Pyle, Law & Order’s Christopher Meloni, and Beverly D’Angelo.

This is not a film to be taken serious, but it is pretty funny. Though a step behind its predecessor, Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay should still be a hit at the box office. This is one of those films that will make the majority of its money on DVD, and will be view immensely by many college students as escapism fun.
