Blind Dating Review:

Blind Dating is the story of Danny (Chris Pine), a good looking, twenty something law student in desperate search for a meaningful relationship. The only catch, Danny is blind but he is working on that. Danny is surrounded by women who are all interested in him, including his therapist, Dr. Evans, who cannot seem to keep her clothes on in his presence.

Danny’s limo driving brother Larry is more than willing to help Danny out. The only problem is that Larry but is more interested in helping Danny find a no strings attached sexual escapade than a meaningful relationship. These mixed motives cause Danny to go on a series of awful dates including one girl who cannot stop crying after she discovers that Danny is blind and one over-amorous androgynous date who cannot seem to keep her hands off of him.

In the mean time, Danny has agreed to partake in an experimental new surgery that involves implanting electrodes in his brain that connect to a camera mounted on a pair of glasses. If the surgery is successful, Danny stands to gain the ability to see some shadows and may even be able to make out a face. In preparation for his surgery, Danny has to go to several doctor appointments where he meets a young Indian girl named Leeza.

Danny and Leeza’s relationship starts off a little stormy but Danny’s charms seem to warm her over. Danny and Leeza begin to date, despite Leeza’s obligation to marry a fellow Indian in an arranged marriage. Not wanting to dishonor her family, Leeza feels she has to break things off with Danny.

Meanwhile, Danny undergoes the surgery and at first it seems successful but the sad reality quickly sets in. Danny’s brain is rejecting the electrodes causing him to have extremely painful headaches. The doctors have no choice but to remove them. Now Danny is back to square one, single and blind.

Blind Dating is an interesting film. It presents itself as a comedy about a blind man dating but it takes on a more serious tone. Danny struggles to find true love, but the focus of the film ends up being more about the experimental surgery and the end result. There is an interesting little side note about the struggles of an Indian girl trying to balance an American upbringing while still honoring her heritage, but mostly the film is about the surgery.

Chris Pine does an excellent job portraying a blind person and never seems to break character but the rest of the film feels disjointed and confused. Blind Dating is yet another example of filmmaking where the right hand does not know what the left hand is doing, ultimately causing the film to miss its mark. The film is peppered with superfluous scenes and characters. Dr. Evan’s inability to keep her clothes on when around Danny or his brother allowing prostitutes to use his limousine for business are just a few of the many unnecessary aspects that seem to have only been included to increase runtime.

Blind Dating is presented in Widescreen and in 5.1 surround sound. Special Features include a Behind the Scenes Featurette , deleted scenes and the films theatrical trailer.
