The Upright Citizen's Brigade: Asssscat! Review:

The Upright Citizen's Brigade continue their zany off the wall comedy with the long awaited Asssscat! It's an entertaining hour or two of comedy but nothing absolutely outstanding. However, the improv is great and chock full of laughs.

Matt Besser, Amy Poehler, Ian Roberts, and Matt Walsh join forces with Chad Carter, Sean Conroy, Andrew Daily, and Horation Sanz, setting up a strong team of wit that basically engages in a game of "tag" style improv sketches. Thomas Lennon (Reno 911!) and Kate Walsh (Grey's Anatomy) serve as the Monologists who help guide the show and add their own little allegories pertaining to the subject. All around, it's a good time.

The Bonus Round has some gems. And what else would you expect from rounds conducted by special Monologists: Will Arnett, Ed Helms, Jen Kirkman, and Paul F. Tompkins? There is plenty of delightful sidesplitting moments with humor that is definitely way out there -- but in a good way. Every sketch takes it to the next level and twists the right, which is surprising and hilarious.

Improv laughs are the hardest to come by and finding them on screen is even harder. But the UCB finds a way to deliver with their classic style and sometimes bizarre humor that so many have come to love. If you're a fan of UCB or even if you just love watching improc comedy, you will dig Asssscat! After all, how could you not like something called Asssscat!? The only thing I don't like about the name is the exclamation point because it makes it awkward to use in written sentences.

The Extras are decent but ultimately a shade below par. The Interview is a good but a little lackluster. In brief, UCB has better chemistry on stage rather than behind it. Monologous Interruptus is pretty funny and gives the audience a sense of what it is like to be up on stage and have a slight case of A.D.D. We Love Out Audience shows how easy it is for comedians to single out patrons to get a laugh. Luckily, no one gets hurt. The Asssscat Theme is a short hilarious segment where the theme song plays over a still frame of a strange cat. And last but certainly not least, the Commentary by UCB. It's better than expected. Usually, comedy commentary is more about laughs but here, they do a great job of explaining the comedy and the process that takes place in order to make successful improv.

The Upright Citizens Brigade: Asssscat! is a fun time that induces laughs abound. Although it's not an epic piece of comedy, it is great. UCB is spot on and the improv is entertaining. The best adjective I can think of to describe this DVD is -- Asssscat!
